It's the little things......

Day 2

It's the little things that drive me crazy.  Not about living in my RV, but more about not living static in one area.

Take for instance prescriptions.  When we were in the S&Bs and even when we were in the RV, but in the same town over the winter, I always used Walgreens.  Never had any trouble with them until we went on the road.  Now it seems every time I go to get a refill there is a problem.  The Dr's office didn't get it, my insurance won't let me refill "that" for 3 more days, the insurance won't allow you to get that filled at the 4th different pharmacy this year.....and several more I can't remember.  Add to that, it seems every time it comes time to get a refill, we are somewhere for only a day or two.  At one place it's too early to fill it and the next stop it's too late!  In any case, IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!

And our mail...it seemed so easy when we started out, but now doesn't seem so.  The company we use out of South Dakota has messed up for the second time in 6 months...and of course it's when we need something in it.  No, it's Fedex's fault, no, it's your fault, no it's not our fault....aarrgghhh!  Looks like we may be looking for a new mail service soon.....stay tuned for that one.

Haircuts....I know women will understand.  It took me 2 years after we moved to Kansas to find someone I really liked and trusted and now I have to grit my teeth and trust a stranger...each time.  I'm getting better at it, but each time I get a haircut...surprise...a new style.  At least so far, my hair has looked just fine, but the way my luck is running I'm due for a bad one!

Glasses...I am blind...without my glasses I can't see 2 inches in front of my face.  In the last couple of years I've graduated to tri-focals.  It seems, either I can't get it right or they can't get it right.  This last pair I got in Albuquerque, 4 weeks ago, I still can't adjust too.  I don't know if it is because my near vision changed a lot and I'm just having trouble adjusting to the near/far difference or they screwed something up.  In any case, having to find an optometrist in a strange city and then trying to find a reasonable rate on the purchase in a strange city is a pain.

All of these changes (yes, I'm whining) are just a matter of having built relationships and then not having them anymore, so I'm sure I will adjust to figuring it out more quickly.

Ok, I'm done whining now.  Thanks for letting me get that out of my system.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being on the road, I LOVE living in our RV, and I LOVE the adventure, but now you know it's not all grins and giggles.  Some days are just not as exciting as others.  :)   Note:  there will be a future post on GOOD "It's the little things".

Today we went to the River Walk and The Alamo.  Tomorrow will be Sea World...if I can drag Dave away from football and racing...we'll see.  I'll let ya know.  Sorry, no pictures today.  I'll make up for it after we go to Sea World.

SHOUTOUT: to Andy at myoldrv.com.  I've been reading Andy's blog for awhile as he is an old hat at gate guarding.  He bit the bullet and started a forum and asked us all to promote it....so here's the link:  http://myoldrv.com/forums/index.php
Stop in and take a look.  At either one.  He's a great blogger and I've really enjoyed his insights.

  1. On the Rx....if you can afford it, get your doctor to write a thirty day Rx for each and pay for it to get filled (do not ask for it to be submitted to your insurance). This gives you a 30 day backlog so when you are running a few days/a week behind while traveling, you won't run out. It worked out well for me. (Just remember to use the oldest first and don't wait till your stash is out to refill...LOL!)

Haircuts...boy, I feel with you on this one. In 4 years I've had maybe 3 good haircuts. My last two have been horrible and it's frustrating for sure!!

Glasses...I wear Progressive lenses (no line tri-focals, have worn them for over 20 years and love them). They are EXPENSIVE...my last three pairs I got in Mexico when wintering in TX (Progresso, Mexico from Mission, TX and Algodones, Mexico from Yuma, AZ). Last time around I got Transition lenses. That was two years ago...I need new glasses and we won't be near either location for another two years. Gotta pay the big bucks I guess...watching both Sears and JC Penney for discount specials. Sometimes you can get glasses/lenses (even Progressives) for $200.

  2. Hi Donna! Good pointer on the RXs. I hadn't thought of that...will give it a go, but may have to do 2 at a time.

I've been buying mine at PX's on post, the progressives, but no transitions this time around. I didn't like the time it took for them to clear after walking into a building.

Thanks so much for the hints...our first year and we can use all we can get! :)
